in the Retail Sector

With retail sector businesses often turning over tens of millions of pounds a year, it is imperative that a networking solution is able to not only improve communication, but also improve the efficiency and day-to-day management of the business.

Our customer, a large chain of department stores, which had just been taken over and re-branded by a national retail group, was in the process of major refurbishment and modernisation. We were employed to develop and install an integrated communications solution, which would reflect the company's commitment to productivity and customer service. The project encompassed ten separate sites and required a strategy which could optimise communications services not only throughout each department and store, but also externally.

After thorough site surveys and thorough discussion with management, we identified the main requirement the customer had from a communications solution was to improve customer service and overall internal communication, by allowing staff to be able to 'manage on the move'. This is a vital component in the competitive retail environment and could be applied to all personnel across the board; managers, maintenance, customer service/support, security, and health and safety officers.

When we began work on the project we were faced with upgrading an aged system which included the use of old mobile radios and a Tannoy system. We carried out wireless surveys throughout each of the ten stores in order to ascertain the amount of coverage required for an effective system, and chose the Multitone KWS8000 DECT wireless server as the best solution.

As well as enabling staff to make and receive calls both internally and externally, the system integrated with the current PABX which meant that key staff could spend more time on the shop floor than tied to a desk. The system was also linked to security and other alarm systems to send out automatic text alerts in the event of the activation of lifts, access doors and fire alarms.

As a result of the implementation of the new communication solution, our customer was delighted to report that it had delivered considerable benefits including; reduced waiting time for customers; more efficient use of time for both staff and management; increased productivity and a consistently high level of service to customers in every store.
